Utah State Board of Education School Meals Updates

What is happening?
The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) waiver that provided free meals to students is expiring at the end of the school year in June 2022.

This means that school meals will no longer automatically be free for everyone and you will need to submit an application to qualify for free/reduced breakfast and lunch.

Ways to Qualify for Free or Reduced Meals
Household size and Income
If you are taking part in assistance programs such as:
• Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
• Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
• Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
• Or if you are experiencing homelessness, are a migrant, or
 a runaway

Who does this affect?
Households with students enrolled in schools with the NSLP who were receiving FREE MEALS due to COVID-19.

Next Steps for You:
Watch for the 2022-2023 School Meals Application from your school if they participate
in the NSLP.

Submit your application for free and reduced-priced meals after July 1, 2022.

If you do not qualify for free or reduced-priced meals, they are available at the
paid-rate. Schools do their best to maintain low-cost, nutritious meals to students using state and federal funding.

APPLICATION INFO
Applications open July 1, 2022 for the 2022-2023 meal benefits.

Remember that households must apply every year to confirm eligibility for free and reduced meals.
